Exploring Dubai for the First Time: Must-Do Experiences

If you’re visiting Dubai for the first time, you’re about to embark on an unforgettable journey. A city that effortlessly blends luxury with adventure, Dubai offers something for every traveler, whether you’re just passing through or planning a longer stay.

Even after living in the UAE for some time now, Dubai still holds a special place in my heart—it’s where my love for travel truly began.

Over the years, I’ve explored this vibrant city countless times, and it never ceases to amaze me. If you’re planning your first trip, here’s your ultimate Dubai bucket list to make the most of your visit.

1. Go on a Desert Safari

One of my all-time favorite experiences is the desert safari. Imagine riding in a 4WD over rolling red sand dunes—it’s exhilarating!

These safaris typically start in the late afternoon, taking you on a thrilling dune-bashing ride before you settle into a Bedouin-style camp. Here, you’ll enjoy camel rides, traditional dance performances, falconry, henna tattoos, and a delicious dinner under the stars. It’s a perfect way to experience the desert landscape and get a taste of Emirati culture.

2. Visit the Burj Khalifa

You can’t visit Dubai without seeing the Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world. Head up to the observation decks on the 124th or 148th floors for a stunning bird’s-eye view of the city. The best time to go? Just before sunset. Watch the sun dip below the horizon and witness the city’s skyline light up.

3. Explore Dubai Mall & Catch the Fountain Show

While at the Burj Khalifa, don’t miss a visit to the Dubai Mall.

Even if you’re not a shopper, there’s plenty to do—wander through high-end stores, check out the indoor aquarium, or marvel at the incredible indoor waterfall.

In the evening, grab a spot to watch the Dubai Fountain Show, a spectacular display of water, music, and lights that happens every half hour from 6 pm to 11 pm.

4. Take a Day Trip to Abu Dhabi

Just an hour’s drive from Dubai, Abu Dhabi is home to the breathtaking Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque.

This architectural marvel is a must-see and offers free entry. While you’re there, you could also visit Ferrari World for some high-speed thrills or explore the stunning Louvre Abu Dhabi.

5. Discover Hatta & Other Hidden Gems

Dubai’s skyscrapers are iconic, but there’s so much more to see outside the city. Take a day trip to Hatta for outdoor activities like kayaking on Hatta Dam or hiking in the mountains. Alternatively, head to Jebel Jais, the UAE’s highest peak, where you can zipline, hike, or just take in the stunning views. If history’s your thing, visit the Mleiha Archaeological Centre for a glimpse into the region’s ancient past.

6. Stroll Through Old Dubai

For a change of pace, explore the historic side of the city with a walking tour of Old Dubai. Start at the Al Fahidi Historic District, where you can visit traditional Emirati homes and sip Arabic coffee. Then, cross the Dubai Creek on a traditional abra boat and dive into the vibrant Spice and Gold Souks.

7. Dubai Miracle Garden

If you’re visiting between October and May, don’t miss the Dubai Miracle Garden. With over 150 million flowers arranged in stunning displays (including a full-size A380 plane made entirely of flowers!), this garden is like nothing you’ve ever seen. It’s the perfect spot for photos, so bring your camera!

8. High Tea at the Burj Al Arab

For a touch of luxury, why not indulge in high tea at the Burj Al Arab? This sail-shaped, 7-star hotel is an icon of Dubai’s skyline, and enjoying afternoon tea here is a special treat. It’s an ideal way to celebrate a milestone or just enjoy the opulence of this world-famous hotel.

9. Go Skiing in the Desert

Yes, you can go skiing in Dubai! Ski Dubai at the Mall of the Emirates offers a full winter experience, complete with skiing, snowboarding, and even penguin encounters—all in the middle of the desert! It’s a fun, unexpected way to cool off and try something new.

10. Taste Traditional Emirati Food

Food is an essential part of any travel experience, and Dubai’s cuisine is no exception. To try authentic Emirati dishes, visit the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding, where you’ll enjoy a traditional meal while learning about local customs. If you’re looking for a more casual experience, head to the Arabian Tea House in the Al Fahidi neighborhood for a delicious breakfast tray filled with local favorites like hummus, falafel, and Karak tea.

Plan Your Itinerary

There’s no shortage of things to do in Dubai, but these must-do activities will give you a taste of the best this incredible city has to offer. Whether you’re seeking adventure, culture, or luxury, Dubai has something for everyone.

For more ideas, consider exploring Dubai’s many museums, taking a dinner cruise on Dubai Creek, or visiting one of the city’s famous theme parks. Wherever your interests lie, you’ll never run out of things to do in this vibrant metropolis.

When is The Best Time To Visit?

The best time to visit Dubai is during the cooler months, from November to March. During this period, the weather is pleasant, making it ideal for outdoor activities and sightseeing. Here’s a breakdown of why this time is optimal:

Weather

  • November to March: Temperatures range from a comfortable 20°C to 30°C (68°F to 86°F), which is perfect for enjoying both the beaches and the desert. This is also the season for outdoor events, festivals, and al fresco dining.
  • April to October: Dubai experiences extreme heat, with temperatures soaring up to 45°C (113°F) during the day, making outdoor activities challenging. However, it’s a great time for indoor attractions, and hotels often offer discounts during this period.

Events and Festivals

  • Dubai Shopping Festival (December-January): One of the biggest retail events in the world, featuring massive discounts, entertainment, and fireworks.
  • Dubai Food Festival (February-March): A celebration of Dubai’s rich culinary scene with food trucks, pop-ups, and gourmet experiences.

Visiting between November and March ensures a comfortable, activity-filled trip while avoiding the sweltering heat of the summer months.
