New Sharjah | Is This Emirate THE FUTURE of the UAE?

People Are LEAVING DUBAI To Live Here

When I first moved to Dubai in January 2015, it felt like I had landed in the ultimate playground for those seeking wealth and opportunity. The glitz, the glamour, and the ceaseless energy of this bustling metropolis were invigorating. However, it wasn’t long before I heard talks of another emirate, one that was often overshadowed by the likes of Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and even Ras Al Khaimah. This lesser-known gem, just a short drive away, is none other than Sharjah.

Sharjah had always been a place I heard about in passing, often mentioned as a more affordable option for low-income workers. It wasn’t a place I ever imagined myself living in. Yet, when a colleague/friend, moved to Sharjah with her family and extended an invitation to visit, my curiosity was piqued. What I discovered there completely transformed my perspective.

The Drive That Changes Everything

The journey from Dubai to Sharjah can take anywhere from 30 minutes to over an hour, depending on traffic. As my friend Jessica navigated through the bustling roads, what was meant to be a quick trip turned into an over-an-hour-long adventure.

Upon arrival, the first thing I noticed was the greenery.

Sharjah, particularly the area known as “New Sharjah,” was a stark contrast to Dubai’s concrete jungle. Palm-lined streets and expansive parks painted a serene picture of this up-and-coming emirate.

A Conservative Heartbeat

As we ventured deeper into Sharjah, the emirate’s conservative nature became increasingly evident. Unlike its glitzy neighbor Dubai, Sharjah is a “dry” emirate, meaning that the sale and public consumption of alcohol are strictly prohibited. However, residents who possess a valid Alcohol License are permitted to consume alcohol within the privacy of their own homes. This regulation underscores Sharjah’s commitment to maintaining a traditional and family-oriented environment.

Sharjah’s conservatism is also reflected in its cultural expectations and social norms. Visitors will quickly notice the emphasis on modest attire, which aligns with the emirate’s deep respect for its cultural and religious heritage. Men and women are encouraged to dress modestly, covering their shoulders and knees, to honor local customs and demonstrate cultural sensitivity. This respect for tradition extends beyond clothing; it’s woven into the very fabric of daily life, from public behavior to the design of public spaces, which often prioritize family-friendly activities and community engagement.

The emirate’s dedication to preserving its cultural identity is also evident in its numerous museums, art galleries, and heritage areas, which offer a window into the rich history and traditions of the UAE. These attractions not only educate visitors about Sharjah’s past but also reinforce the values and principles that guide its present.

A Cultural Oasis

One of the highlights of our visit was the House of Wisdom. This cultural hub is not just a library but a space for innovation, creativity, and education. It offers a plethora of events ranging from oud making to bee keeping, and even carpet sewing. Here, I could see the cultural richness that Sharjah boasts, earning its title as the cultural capital of the Arab world.

My friend shared her reasons for moving to Sharjah, highlighting the abundance of opportunities and the inspiring presence of empowered women leading various initiatives. As someone with two children, she appreciated the safe, enriching environment Sharjah provided for her family. It was a refreshing change from our home countries, the Emirates of Sharjah offers not just economic prospects but a fulfilling cultural experience.

A New Horizon for Education and Innovation

Our next stop was University City, an impressive enclave housing some of the region’s best educational institutions, including the University of Sharjah and the American University of Sharjah. Driving through this area, lined with state-of-the-art facilities and lush green spaces, it was easy to see why Sharjah is becoming an educational powerhouse.

Real Estate Insights

We then explored various housing options in Aljada, known as the hub of New Sharjah. The properties ranged from reasonably priced studios to luxurious three-bedroom apartments. Despite some villas feeling overpriced for their size, the overall affordability compared to Dubai was compelling. The area was vibrant, filled with lifestyle and leisure activities, shops, and restaurants all at an affordable price.

The Commute Conundrum

One of the critical considerations for anyone thinking of moving to Sharjah is the commute.

While Sharjah offers a tranquil, family-friendly environment, many professionals still commute to Dubai for work. The lack of a significant business or financial district means that sectors like banking, law, and technology are underrepresented in Sharjah.

This daily commute can be daunting, given the notorious traffic between the two emirates.

A Final Thought

Living in Sharjah presents a unique blend of culture, affordability, and community spirit. However, it may not be for everyone, especially those who thrive in the fast-paced, diverse environment of Dubai. Sharjah’s more conservative and localized atmosphere could make some expats feel like outsiders, whereas Dubai’s melting pot offers a sense of belonging.

For those working from home or seeking a quieter, more culturally rich lifestyle, Sharjah could indeed be the future. It’s a place where tradition meets modernity, where you can immerse yourself in Emirati culture while enjoying the comforts of a well-developed infrastructure.

In conclusion, my visit to Sharjah opened my eyes to the possibilities this emirate holds. It’s not just an affordable alternative to Dubai; it’s a vibrant, evolving community with its own unique charm. Whether you’re an educator, a culture enthusiast, or someone looking for a peaceful place to raise a family, Sharjah might just be the hidden gem you’ve been searching for.

Cheers, Meg
